Belgian Road Safety Concerns: Falling Behind European Standards

Belgium Lags Behind Neighbors in Road Quality and Safety

Subpar Infrastructure and High Fatalities

Belgium's road infrastructure and safety measures are lagging behind those of its Western European neighbors. Recent data reveals that Belgium's overall road quality is below average, with a score of 44 out of 100 in 2019. This places it behind most of its neighbors, including Italy, Ireland, and Germany, which scored 44, 53, and 55 respectively.

Furthermore, Belgium's road fatality rate is a cause for concern. In 2019, there were 646 road deaths reported in the country. The European Road Safety Observatory (ERF) highlights several issues that contribute to these safety concerns, including inadequate road infrastructure, insufficient enforcement of traffic regulations, and a lack of effective road safety management.

As a result, Belgium faces an ongoing challenge in improving its road safety record. Further investments in road infrastructure, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and a comprehensive approach to road safety management are necessary to bring Belgium's road safety standards in line with those of its European peers.
